Eastern Cape

With a population of 6,3 million people, the Eastern Cape has the third largest population in the country, the latest census figures reveal. Of these 2,9 million are male and 3,3 million are female. The results, announced in Pretoria today, represent the population of South Africa as on the night of 9 to 10 October, 1996.

The results of the latest census conducted nationwide in 1996, were released by President Nelson Mandela and Finance Minister Trevor Manuel in Pretoria today. The figures reveal that around 37% of the Eastern Cape’s population live in urban areas as opposed to 63% who live in non-urban areas. Of the total South African population of forty-and-a-half million people, 36,6% live in urban areas. This is a large number. If all people in South Africa took hands, they would circle the earth once and a bit.

In the Eastern Cape, around 86% of the population are African/Black, 7% are Coloured, 0,3% are Indian/Asian and 5% are White. Among people aged 20 years and above, more than 20% have had no schooling at all, whilst 21% have had some primary education. Five percent of the province's people have a tertiary qualification, 11% have matric,

33 % have had some secondary education and 9% have completed their primary education.

At 0,7%, the province’s mentally disabled population appears to be the country’s highest. Figures for other forms of disability are: 2,6 (sight), 1,1% (hearing), 1,8% (physical) and 0,6% (more than one disability).
